This video highlights an important song which is part of Utah history, and therefore, part of U.S. history. It is entitled, "Beautiful Zion for Me." The words are by Charles W. Penrose, and the music is by John Rogers Thomas. Thomas first wrote "Beautiful Isle of the Sea," and Penrose later used this melody for his song. Penrose wrote the words about the Utah Territory when he was in England probably around 1860. He missed his Utah home.

This trip is within easy reach from St. George, Utah, allowing one to leave and return in one day. Take the Cane Beds Road off of Utah State Road 59, but only try this route with a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Here is a pictorial record of the various homes where one family lived and loved. Through the years, often it was necessary to improved the land. In these cases, the bare land was filled with weeds and rocks. The shovel, rake, and pick required abundant sweat and energy in order to tame the land. Sprinkler systems were installed. Where to plant trees and shrubs was always a question. When one builds a home and landscapes a yard, thousands of problems and questions need to be solved and answered. Try it someday and you will see what I am talking about. Yet out of the chaos of raw disorder and wilderness emerged places of peace and beauty, places where our family could grow, play and thrive.

Many struggle with eating too much and too often the foods we love. Often, our choices are not the most healthy choices. Many of us love ice cream, cake, candy, soda, fried foods, and butter-laden breads. It's hard because we gradually see the effect on our bodies of our happy choices. The situation is a bummer, and the solution is not much fun. Maybe our song should be, "We are fat little lambs, whee."

As a young man, I was involved each year with the potato harvest in Fremont County, Idaho. As an old man, I was involved with the potato harvest at the Parkinson Farms. Most of the photos here show modern methods for harvesting and transporting potatoes. I greatly enjoyed working for the Parkinson family. I observed and felt the operation in my fingers, feet, and butt. I experienced the dust and noise of the equipment. And I saw the power and drive of men and women who were driven to complete the harvest in a narrow window of time. I respect the farmer class. They know how to work , and they teach their children how to work too. BTW, thanks to youTube and Google. Their free services to humanity are great and noble.

The western way of life is alive and well including the ranching cowboys and cowgirls of Utah and Wyoming. On this day of the roundup, family and friends gather in Utah to bring the cows and calves into a common area. The calf is then separated from the mother by two ropers who secure the head and back legs. The process take a lot of skill and practice. Even the horses need to be trained for such an event. The calf is then branded and shots are given to insure the health of the new calf. The method used has been part of the western way of life for many years. When the work is all done, a wonderful meal follows for the cowboys and cowgirls. Thank you, youTube, for allowing this video and thousands of videos to be seen around the world.
